Cańón del Cańón Review and Rating

Rare Cigars Cańón del Cańón Torpedo 6x54 Review

By Antonio N.
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Maduro
Filler: Nicaraguan Somoto, Condega, Jalapa
Purchased from Rare-Cigars.com

Cut Style: V-Cut
Aged: 8 weeks un-cellophaned in 67% humidity

A hefty, well-constructed unbanded Nicaraguan puro torpedo with a dark brown wrapper, with some darker brown splashes throughout the wrapper leaf, there is large vein running through the middle of the wrapper leaf, but it is an otherwise oily and tasty looking Nicaraguan Habano Maduro leaf. The cigar has a slight “give” when squeezed, but overall, firmly rolled, and seems packed to the gills with tobacco. This is a Rare Cigars exclusive.

The description on Rare-Cigars had this to say about the name.

“In Spanish, the words "cannon" and "canyon" are the same: "Cańón."
Hence the name Cańón del Cańón... "Cannon of the Canyon."

Pre light bouquet of milk chocolate, marzipan, and fresh baked bread.

Canon del Canon cigar review

First Third - From the first draw, I immediately tasted notes of airy sweetness, that left a light and pleasant bittersweet finish on the tongue. The draw is perfect to my preference; it takes no effort to draw billowy clouds of smoke. The aroma is light and very pleasant. About an inch into the first third, I detect notes of citrus resembling orange peels, as the strength builds from mild to a solid medium bodied smoke. The burn line was wavy through the first third but did not require corrective lighting.

Second Third - As the second third begins, the light airy sweetness takes a back seat to the intensifying notes of citrus, as notes of chocolate cake and cocoa emerge. The ash fell off immediately at the start of the second third and revealed a much more even burn line. Strength remains a solid medium.

Last Third - The airy sweetness in the first third is all but gone now, as the dominant notes in the last third are deeper dark chocolate and black coffee. Light spicy notes begin to show on the finish as the cigar slowly builds from medium plus to full, still without any harshness. The burn line is wavy again but not a distraction.

I found no other reviews of the Cańón del Cańón Torpedo, but there is good information on the blend at rare-cigars.com. The transition through each third of the cigar, while straightforward, was very interesting. Between the mild, light and airy sweetness of the first third, to the orange peel citrus notes in the second third, to the darker chocolate and coffee notes in the last third, I cannot decide which I liked more. It seems like I was smoking 2 different cigars, which is fine by me. A very enjoyable 80-minute smoking experience, and the draw was impeccable throughout. Bravo!

At $35 per 5 pack, the Cańón del Cańón Torpedo is a bargain. Slap a nice band on this cigar and you can easily sell it for $10.
